- Kosygin takes over as premier of the Soviet Union, replacing Krushchev. However, Brezhnev is made the first secretary of the Communist Party.
- Nelson Mandela receives a life sentence in South Africa.

- Plans to build the New York World Trade Center are announced.

- Anti-imperialist movement begins in Panama
- University of California Regents forbid protests of the Vietnam war on the campus. This starts the Free Speech movement that shuts down the University of California at Berkeley. In the end 800 students are arrested, but serves as model for civil disobedience which is used at other campuses.
