"Guide" wins Filmfare Award for "Best Picture".

India makes its first 70mm film. This is "Around the World" starring Raj Kapoor and Rajashree.
The Tamil actor/ politician M.G. Ramachandran is shot in the neck by fellow actor M.R. Radha. He survives but is badly wounded.

India becomes self sufficient in the production of black-and-white film stock. However colour film stock must still be imported.
Mohd. Rafi wins the Filmfare Award for "Best Male Playback" for the song Baharon Phool Barsao from "Suraj". He is also awarded the Padma Shree, by the Indian government.
