- Watergate Scandal begins in Washington with the arrest of five men caught attempting to bug the Democratic National Committee Headquarters. This scandal will ultimately topple the Nixon administration.
- U.S. President Richard Nixon orders the development of a space shuttle program.
- Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi is discovered in Guam. He had spent 28 years in the jungle.
- First scientific hand-held calculator (HP-35) is introduced (price $395).

- U.S. actress Jane Fonda tours North Vietnam, during which she is photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun.

- Anwar Sadat expels 20,000 Soviet advisors from Egypt.
- Dictator Idi Amin declares that Uganda will expel 50,000 Asians with British passports to Britain within three months.
