- Rhodesia's Prime Minister Ian D. Smith and three black leaders agree on transfer of power to a black majority rule, thus ending racial segregation in this African country.
- Pope Paul VI dies at the age of 80. He is replaced by John Paul I who dies a month later. He is then replaced by John Paul II.
- Jim Jones's and his followers commit mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.
