- Parveen Babi, actress dies at the age of 49, apparently from complications arising from diabetic gangrene.
- Gemini Ganesan, actor in South Indian films, father of actress Rekha, dies at the age of 84.
- Ismail Merchant, India-born filmmaker, dies at the age of 68.
- Anu Malik wins Filmfare award for "Best Music Director" for his work in "Main Hoon Na".
- Sunil Dutt, actor dies at the age of 75.

- Amitabh Bachchan is hospitalised for surgery. This puts a number of projects on hold including the hit TV show "Kaun Banega Crorepati".
