The notes of the Indian gamut are known as sargam. Just as the English word "alphabet" is derived from the Greek letters "Alph-Beta", in the same way the word "Sargam" is derived from "Sa-Re-Ga-Ma". Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, are simply the first notes (swar) of the Indian musical gamut. The swar are Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. Read about the swar for more information. Whenever these notes are sung in a song it is known as "swarmalika".
