His mother Vandana Bhagwat is a well known vocalist & is one of the senior students of Late Pt. Nivruttibuva Sarnaik of Jaipur Gharana. He has been playing tabla since the age of 6 under the instruction of Late Pt. Vishnu Aloni & Shantanu Panshikar. A traditional musical environment being available at his home has helped him to develop his skill as a good tabla solo player and as an accompanist. Misc. Info: Rathna Kumar, disciple of Kalaimamani Ms. K.J. Sarasa and Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, is the Director of Texas' first and largest dance school, established in 1975. She has an Honorary Doctorate in Performing Arts and is perhaps one of the most recognized and awarded Indian dancers in the US. Rathna has over 32 years' experience in teaching and choreographing and an illustrious dance career spanning five decades. She has, to her credit, a Congressional Recognition, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor of Texas, awards from three Houston Mayors, the Houston Metro, Asian Pacific American Heritage Association, and the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, besides numerous others both in India and the US, and is an eight time recipient of Choreography Project and Fellowship Awards from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance. A prolific and creative artist and a tireless innovator, she has choreographed more than 300 new dances in both the Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi styles, and has directed and presented nearly 25 dance productions, using classical, folk and contemporary idioms. Rathna has also done collaborative works with African, Jewish, Indonesian, Japanese, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Modern dancers, has curated two international conferences on Indian dance, in 2001 and 2003, and will be presenting a third one - Indian Paintings - in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, on March 8 & 9, 2008. As the Artistic Director of Samskriti, Society for Indian Performing Arts, Rathna brings in renowned Indian artists to present to Houston audiences.
